San Marco is a neigborhood if Jacksonville, Florida and is located on the south bank of the river. Development in this area started in 1921 when the Saint John's River bridge was built. The area was based on the design of Piazza San Marco in Venice Italy and hence took on a European look and feel. This area is unlike any other section of Jacksonville. It is very scenic and quiet, yet close to downtown. It is filled with botique shops and great restaurants such as Matthews of San Marco. The area has a governing body called the San Marco Preservation society which helps maintain the historic look of the area.
